Two exciting innovations that solve real-world problems in a practical way – one developed by a recent NUS graduate and another by a current student – emerged among 48 entries from across six universities in Singapore to clinch the top prizes in this year’s James Dyson Award.

Bringing together aspiring student entrepreneurs, start-up founders and professionals in the entrepreneurship field, the BLOCK71 Singapore Open House saw a juxtaposition of participants who gained an overview of the vibrant local tech start-up scene and an understanding of how BLOCK71 fosters innovation, collaboration and opportunities to support the growth of start-ups across Asia.

At this year’s Inter-Varsity Games Festival (IVGF), NUS Esports varsity teams and athletes had one of their best showing yet - taking home first and second place across all four e-sports titles! Organised by NUS Esports in collaboration with other Institutes of Higher Learning, IVGF is the annual inter-varsity e-sports tournament where local universities battle it out for the top spots across different computer, mobile and console games.

A fintech platform developed by the Land Transport Authority Singapore allows users of public transport to download data on their bus and train rides. With this innovation, Assoc Prof Alberto Salvo, Deputy Head (Research) at the Dept of Economics, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at NUS and Prof Leonard Lee, from the Dept of Marketing at NUS Business School and Director of the Lloyd's Register Foundation Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk at NUS opined that consumers would be educated on their carbon footprint, and the government could reward those who are greening their lifestyles.
Singapore is fast becoming a super-aged society. While the National Day Rally 2023 focused on various aspects of successful ageing, there is one dimension that looms large over Singapore’s future: The impact of ageing on our workforce and economy. Meeting workplace needs in a super-aged society thus requires making every job attractive and maximising every worker’s potential said Assoc Prof (Practice) Terence Ho from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at NUS.
