LEIGH KEREOPA WINS SECOND PRIZE IN NEW ZEALAND NATIONAL CONCERTO COMPETITION

Fourth-year piano major Leigh Kereopa won second prize in the National Concerto Competition in Christchurch, New Zealand, on 10 March 2007.

Leigh emerged second from an initial field of 30 competitors with his performance of Edward MacDowell's Piano Concerto No. 2 in D minor, Op. 23. Born in New Zealand, Leigh came to Singapore to study with Dr Thomas Hecht, Head of Piano Studies at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, when it opened in 2003.

One of New Zealand’s most outstanding young pianists, Leigh has been winning awards in a variety of musical activities including composition and jazz since his schooldays. More recently, Leigh won the top prize in the Muriel May Scholarship Competition in New Zealand in 2005, when he was in his third year at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory.
