The Wind Quintet from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory won second prize in the 9th Asian Symphonic Band Competition
A wind quintet from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory won second prize and a horn quintet won third prize in the Wind Ensemble category at the 9th Asian Symphonic Band Competition organised by the College of Music, Mahidol University in Thailand from 21-25 November 2007.
The wind quintet comprised Yao Jing (flute/piccolo), Zhang Nianchao (oboe), Dai Le (clarinet), Xie Yelin (horn), and Pei Fei (bassoon). The horn quintet members were Huang Yichong, Liu Liang, Liu Zhiguo, Shi Jieliang, and Chakrit Songtorsrisakun. Repertoire performed by the horn quintet included Anthem for Apep composed by Yong Siew Toh Conservatory faculty member Dr Kawai Shiu while the wind quintet performed Sci-fi Lounge written by faculty member Dr Tony Makarome.
A total of 13 large ensembles and 18 small ensembles representing countries from all over Asia took part in the competition. The competition is organised annually in Thailand.
